Avago: Small Package 3.3V Analog Encoder (HEDS-97Ex Series)
Description
The HEDS-97Ex transmissive analog optical encoder is a high performance optical encoder, developed in a small form factor and specially designed for use in applications that requires stepper, BLDC and DC motors to perform its operations . This transmissive analog encoder offers Avago’s customers with the option of lower power consumption of a 3.3V input supply, as compared to the conventional encoders with a 5V input supply requirement. Lower power consumption of the encoder translates to lower overall power consumption for the applications, thus reducing energy costs. Furthermore, based on conventional 5V input supply encoders, customers are required to purchase additional components such as a voltage converter, in order to step-up the voltage supply from their application which operates on a 3.3V input supply to the encoder in order for it to operate. With the HEDS-97Ex, customers benefit instantly by omitting the need for these additional components. With a 200 LPI resolution, and options for higher resolution through interpolation, the HEDS-97Ex provides design engineers with a wide resolution encoder package that easily accommodates to a variety of applications such as machine tools, printers, scanners and machine equipment, all of which requires a broad range of resolutions. Coupled with its small form factor, design engineers are assured of an easy design-in with their applications. When used in conjunction with a codewheel, the encoder is able to detect rotary and linear positions.

Transmissive Encoders
The Transmissive Encoder is an emitter/detector module. Coupled with a code wheel, this transmissive encoder translates rotary motion of a shaft into digital output. The transmissive encoder contains a single Light Emitting Diode (LED) as its light source. The light is collimated into a parallel beam by means of a single polycarbonate lens located directly over the LED. Opposite the emitter is the integrated detector circuit.
This IC consists of multiple sets of photodetectors and the signal processing circuitry necessary to produce the digital waveforms. The code wheel rotates between the emitter and detector of the transmissive encoder, causing the light beam to be interrupted by the pattern of spaces and bars on the code wheel. The photodiodes which detects these interruptions are arranged in a pattern that corresponds to the radius and design of the code wheel. These detectors are also spaced such that a light period on one pair of detectors corresponds to a dark period on the adjacent pair of detectors. Avago offers an extensive range of transmissive encoders to meet the different needs of a wide variety of applications.
